ANONYMOUS [MOLL, HERMAN], A Correct Globe with the New Discoveries, c.1775. Pocket globe, 2 3/4” in diameter. Original fishskin case with celestial gores with the inscription “A Correct Globe with ye New Constelations of Dr. Halley &c.” This English pocket globe is the very rare 1775 reissue of Herman Moll’s 1717 globe. Moll was considered “the foremost geographer of his time,” and he helped shape the popular geographical images of America and much of the rest of the world. He was not known as a globemaker but examples of a 1717 pocket globe by him have turned up in libraries and the Rudolf Schmidt catalog where it was pointed out that “Recent research has suggested that the gores for this pocket globe were reissued in 1775.” On the globe being offered here, much of the printing on the sphere and the celestial gores within the case is identical to that on the Moll, indicating that this is indeed the reissue. Only the cartouche on the celestial gores was changed but the terrestrial gores includes the track of James Cook’s voyage of 1760, some changes along the west coast of America where California is no longer and island, and Australia and New Zealand are adapted according to Cook’s discoveries.
