Verre-Eglomise Credenza Circa. 1935 American Verre-eglomise is a process whereby glass is decorated on the back by unfired painting, or usually, by gilding, sometimes engraved with pictorial or decorative motifs. The painting or gilding is protected by another sheet of glass or by a coat of varnish, or a layer of metal foil. This process has been used since ancient Roman times. This credenza, made in the 1930's in America, has four doors (2 side doors) The center cabinet has 2 wood shelves. Chinoiserie design (Western interpretation of Chinese art, seldom accurate and always rendered with some deference to the European or American stylistic ideals of the time) with trees, flowers and birds. Soft pinks, white, green and bronze are the predominant colors. The credenza measures 53 1/2 inches wide, 34 inches high, and 15 1/2 inches deep. A wonderful piece of functional art.
