George IV, dated October 15 1825 1825 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Davis. Framed in an old wood frame with non-reflection glass. Stitched to linen with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours light brown, cream, gold, black, greens, dark brown and pale blue. Verse reads ''Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand . As the first effort of an infant hand> And while her fingers on the canvass move . Engage her tender thoughts to seek> thy love . With thy dear Children let her have a part . And write thy name> thyself upon her heart . Then when the last sad Eve of life shall come . Angels> will waft her to her Heavenly home . The eternal bounties of his Cross to share> And triumph in her dear Redeemer there''. Signed and dated ''Mary Davis Work Aged 9 October 15 1825''. A wonderful set of motifs, including a central picture of a cottage entitled ''Newton Cottage'' together with garden, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, fruit trees, angels with crowns and dogs. Generally good. A number of holes. A number of patchy stains and uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang. 18.5ins by 20ins wide
