George III, dated 1806 1806 Silkwork Sampler by Charlotte Smart. Framed in an old wood frame with glass. Stitched to linen edging, which is stuck with tape to card. Chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, cream, yellow, pale blue, light brown, dark brown, white, black, red and pink. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-21. Verse reads ''Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand> As the first efforts of an infents hand> And while her fingers on the canvas move> Engage her tender heart to seek thy love> With thy dear children let her have her part> And write her name thyself upon her heart''. Inscriptions read ''Be ever faithful> To your Friend> Honours the road> To gain your end''. ''Follow the Lamb> Wheresoever he go> and you shall gain> the crown of glory''. Signed and dated ''Perform''d by Charlotte Smart In 1806''. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including crowns, diamonds, lions, dogs, birds, flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, blossoming tree and hearts. Good. Several small holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. Minor stitch losses to the divider lines and letters/numbers. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Very slight colour run around the green threads and inscriptions. Unevenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear and a chip, but structurally sound and ready to hang. 17.25ins by 13ins wide
