1834 Silkwork Sampler by Eliza Pearse

William IV, dated November 1834 1834 Sampler by Eliza Pearse. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Stitched to paper with wood backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours green, navy blue, pale blue, dark brown, gold, white, light green, cream and black. Verse titled ''Live to Die'' reads ''You whose fond wishes do to heaven aspire> Who make those blest abodes your sole desire> If you are wise and hope that blifs to gain> Use well your time live not an hour in vain> Let not the morrow your vain thoughts employ> But think this day the last you shall enjoy''. Signed and dated ''Eliza Pearse November 1834''. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including butterflies, birds, fruit baskets, crowns, stags, a large tree and potted flowering plants. Good. A few small holes, and some loss of ground to the bottom right corner. Some patchy stains to the top and left edges. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing slight wear, but structurally sound and ready to hang. 14.5ins by 12ins wide
