1824 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Mccallester
Price: $1650.00
George IV, dated 1824 1824 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Mccallester. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Stitched to linen and loose mounted onto card with brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, cream, pale blue, copper, black, pink, light green, orange and red. Alphabet A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-4. Verse reads ''Within thy circling power I stand> On every side I find thy hand> Awake Asleep at home Abroad> I am surrounded still with God.> Omay these thoughts possess my brest> Where.er I rove where.er I rest.> Nor let my weakest passions dare> Consent to sin for God is there''. Signed and dated ''Mary the daughter of James and Jane Mccallester Wrought this in the tenth Year of her Age Whitehaven 1824''. Whitehaven is a town in Cumbria, England. A good set of motifs, including two houses, one flanked by trees, potted flowering plants, butterflies, a cow, beehive, figures on the lawn and sailing ships. Generally Good. Two holes and some old tack holes around the edge. Patchy staining and some darker stains and specks. Some stitch loss to the verse, signature and divider lines. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing some wear and has a chip to the top right corner, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ''as is''. 19.5ins by 14.5ins wide
