George IV, dated 1824 1824 Silkwork Sampler by Susanna Chandler. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, dark green, light green, pale blue, black, cream and light brown. Verse entitled ''Truth'' reads ''The life of Truth, beautifieth youth;> And makes it comely to behold:> Blessed are they, that make it their stay;> And prize it more than gold:> It shall be to them a royal diadem;> Transcending all earthly joys:> They shall be blest, and ever at rest;> Where nothing shall annoy.''. Signed and dated ''Susanna Chandler Finishd this work in the 10 Year of her age 1824;''. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, cows, birds, flowers, fruit trees, stags, fruit baskets, squirrels, fir trees, crowns, hearts, a leopard and sheep. Generally Good. A number of small holes and some loss of ground to the top, right and bottom edges. One patchy stain to the top left corner. Very minor stitch loss to the verse and signature. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 16.25ins by 12.5ins wide
