George IV, dated 1826 1826 Silkwork Sampler by Martha Hervy Penn. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian Eye. Meandering floral border. Colours green, cream, blue, pale green, dark brown, gold and pale blue. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-24. Verse entitled ''A WISH'' reads ''May God who reigns enthron''d on high> In that bright world above the sky> In tender pity condescend> To be my father and my friend> 2> To be a lamb in Jesu''s fold> I''d covet more than mines of gold> For earth with all her gaudy toys> Can pe''r afford such lasting Joys> 3> Soon I must quit this vale of woe> And close my eyes on all below> Then may my happy spirit rise> To join the chorus of the skies''. Signed and dated ''MARTHA HERVY PENN AGED 7 YEARS 1826''. A few motifs including a sailing ship, stars, lions, flowers, potted flowering plants and fruit baskets. Good. Several holes and a repair. A few small stains and some darker specks. Some stitch losses to the verse and signature. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang. 16.25ins by 12.75ins wide
