William IV, dated 1836 1836 Silkwork Sampler by Ellen Gilder. Framed in an old wood frame with non-reflection glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border along three sides. Colours pale green, gold, light green, brown and pink. Verse reads ''Jesus the only thought of thee.> With sweetness fills my breast.> But sweeter far it is to see.> And on thy beauty feast.> No art nor eloquence of man.> Can tell the joy of love.> Only the saints can understand.> What they in jesus prove.> Then I ll for ever jesus sing.> And with the saints rejoice.> And both my heart and tongue shall bring.> Their tribute to my dearest king.> In never ending joys Amen.''. Signed and dated ''Ellen. Gilder Aged. 13. 1836.''. A scattering of motifs, including butterflies, dogs, birds, houses, angels, flowers, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, fir trees, a lady and a gentleman and shepherds with their sheep. Generally Good. A number of holes. No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 23.5ins by 23.5ins wide
