George III, dated 1771 1771 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Coal. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. No border. Colours magenta, yellow, green, pale blue, gold, pale green and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-14. Verse reads ''Thou shalt have no more Gods but me> Before no Idol bow thy knee 3 Take not the> Name of God in vain 4 Nor dare the Sabbath> ??? Profane 5 Give both thy Parents honour due> ?? Need that thou go murder do 7 abstain from words> and deeds unclean 8 Nor steal tho thou art poore> nor make a wil??l lye nor love it 10 what is thy neighbours do ????''. Signed and dated ''Elizabeth Coal her work ended March the 1 1771''. A few motifs including flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, strawberries, diamonds and potted flowering plants. Fair. Large hole/patch of damage to the bottom left of the sampler. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. Some stitch losses to motifs and verse. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Overframed on the right obscuring part of the date. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 16.5ins by 9.75ins wide
