1844 Sampler by Catherine McGarv?
Price: $1000.00
Victorian, dated August 2 1844 1844 Sampler by Catherine McCarv?. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass and hanging hook to the top. Stitched to a wood stretcher frame with linen dust cover tacked to the back. The sampler is worked in silk and cotton on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours navy blue, cream, light blue, green, pink and gold. Alphabet A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-14. Verse reads ''one hundred years who then shall tell> of those whom now I love so well .> one hundred years and we shall be .> In endless bless or misery .''. Signed and dated ''Catherine Mc Carva . August 2 1844 . Aged 10.''. Unusual motif of a house set into a hill, with a pond to one side and surrounded by birds, trees, flowers, a rabbit and swan. Generally Good. Several holes. A few patchy stains. Some stitch losses to the border, divider line, alphabet, numbers and verse. Last letter of the surname has been re-stitched and is hard to decipher. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Slight colour run around the navy blue threads. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ''as is''. 15.25ins by 11.75ins wide
