William IV, dated 1833 1833 Silkwork School Sampler by Margaret Baines. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours gold, light green, cream and navy blue. Verse reads ''When I on this my Sampler gaze> In future sad or happy days> Its Woodbine wreath an cross stitch neat> Kind admonition may repeat> The childs achievement then shall be> As pure o future Industry''. Signed and dated ''Margaret Baineses Specimen Weld Bank School 1833''. A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, geese, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, baskets, swans and butterflies. Good. Two holes. A few light, patchy stains, and slight discolouration around the edges. Very minor stitch loss to one potted flowering plant motif. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Slight colour run around some of the navy blue threads. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging. 16.75ins by 21ins wide
