Victorian, circa 1860 Staffordshire spill vase modeled as two foxes, each with a bird. One fox standing in front of a tree with a bird in its mouth. The other fox recumbent below with its front legs resting over a bird. Leaf and shredded clay decoration. Three legs molded free. Dull gilt base line and spill rim. Similar piece illustrated figure 2965, page 251, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Good. No hairlines. No chips. A few paint losses to the top bird. Slight rubbing to gilt and right ear of top fox. Kiln effect: two shrinkage lines to front left leg of top fox. Repaired crack to spill. Restoration of the lower fox''s free molded leg. Retouching to leaves, birds and foxes. 9ins high
