In 1836, French engineer Archlle Collas invented a machine that enabled artists to make proportionally perfect larger or smaller duplicates of a sculpture. This process was used to make copies of famous ancient works of art, including the "Versailles Diana" now housed in the Louvre, a Roman marble work itself a copy of a Greek original. This bronze version captures all the strength and Classical beauty of the original in a much more modest, personal scale.
