Antique green silk chasuble decorated with floral pattern - Anonymous artist
Antique green silk chasuble decorated with delicate and intricate embroidery featuring a floral pattern. In the center there is a cross embroidered with sacred IHS signifying in Latin Jesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus the savior of humanity). It is also attributed to IHS the Latin "In Hoc Signo" (Conquer in this sign), allegedly worn in battles by the emperor Constantine the Great on his labarum (standard bearing sign). The central cross is delineated at the ends with fleur de lis denoting a French high prelate origin. This chasuble was purchased in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam. Length: 68.5" (174 cm.). At widest point the chasuble measures 24.5" (62 cm.). The chasuble probably dates to 18th. century, it has age wear of the silk, nevertheless, the embroidery retained the vivid colors. Interesting historic and rare Catholic artifact originating from a mainly Buddhist country.
