The members of the Bateman family, which include Anne, Hester, Jonathan, Peter, and William were all prominent silversmiths in the George III Era. They were among the most popular smiths of their time and their work portrays clearly the exacting apprenticeship to which each was subjected. The name of Hester Batemen is by far the best known of the five, and the work of this celebrated lady smith is greatly in demand. The delicate craftsmanship which was characteristic of her has influenced greatly present popularity. Only a few pieces baring her hallmark are available. The Hester Bateman sterling silver mug we are offering for sale dates 1781-1782. It is in superb condition with no dings, dents, monograms, or engravings. The mug has a beautiful acanthus handle. The bottom has very strong and clear hallmarks with very little rubbing. It has some engraved letters and numbers from the last collection this piece was in. Other than the identification engraving on the bottom, there is no other engraving on this piece. The mug measures 5-1/4 inches tall, and has diameter at the bottom of 3-1/2 inches. The diameter at the top is 3-1/4 inches. From the top lip to the back of the mug handle it measures 5 inches wide. Weight 11+ troy ounces, 346.7 grams.
