Antique Hamedan, late nineteenth centuryWhile twentieth-century examples typified the commercialization of Persian carpet weaving, the earlier, truly antique Hamedans of the nineteenth century are eagerly sought after as authentic village rugs, like this stunning example. Here a series of diamond medallions linked by bars and terminating in large hooked finials floats against a midnight blue field, with smaller star medallions and ‘boteh’ or paisley motifs in the intervening spaces. The spare, open effect and bold graphic scale of the field design contrast with the finesse and complexity of the ‘crab’ border and the minor vinescroll borders to either side, just as the palette of soft autumnal colors offers a lovely complement to the cool blueness of the field. This extraordinary runner has all the charm and subtlety of the best Caucasian rugs produced somewhat further north.
