Antique Amritsar, India, circa 1900. An elegant design of palmettes and arabesque vinescrolls floats gracefully across the field of this stately antique Amritsar. The central arabesque in salmon functions as a latent medallion, anchoring the sinuous floral elements that radiate outward to the four corners of the field. A rich palmette vinescroll main border encloses the field, but set against a rose-salmon ground for a subtle framing contrast. While the design of the carpet adheres closely to classical Persian models, the soft, delicate palette makes this an eminently decorative carpet.
