Antique Amritsar, India, early twentieth centuryThe luxurious elegance of Moghul court carpets comes alive once more on this splendid antique Amritsar. Here the medallion format and the arabesque detail converge generally with Persian style and taste, but the serrated leafy details and lush naturalism of the drawing recall the great Moghul forerunners. Unlike the latter, however, the palette is cool and restrained, relying mostly on soft shades of mauve and gold with a delicate tone-on-tone effect that is supremely decorative. The lustrous pile contributes to the aura of reserved opulence.
