Antique Gabbeh, Southwest Persia, early twentieth century
A striking grid pattern outlined in soft salmon with a multi-colored ladder design makes up the field of this exciting nomadic Gabbeh. The squares within the grid are rendered in a mottled multi--tone texture, with some in soft blue, yellow, and aubergine-cocoa. The effect of the piece resides especially in the contrast of the tiny effects of the mottled coloration and the ladder ornament against the quiescent patches of pure color.
