The picture shows the Gunner looking up at a passing plane (it is a remaque in the top right corner), and in the bottom left hand margin is a remarque depicting a column of guns led by an officer on a charger.Charles ‘Snaffles’ Johnson Payne (1884 – 1967) was an English painter who specialized in water colors, and who’s subject matter was invariably equestrian (racing, hunting, polo and pig sticking), military or a combination of these.
