Cast iron billiard table iron marked E. J. Riley Ltd., Accrington.The purpose of ironing the cloth is to lay the nap flat to increase the speed of the balls in play. This was and still is done with a warm dry billiard iron. Care must be taken to keep the iron moving at all times. The iron was heated on a stove and carefully used so as not to scorch the cloth.
