Eton straw boater - For Sale

Eton straw boater
Price: $617.00
The central decoration on this boater is of a gilt figure of St George on his horse slaying the dragon, with a spray of artificial flowers underneath. St George is the Patron Saint of England, celebrated on the 23rd of April. In gold lettering on the red hat band are the words 'St. GEORGE'. On the inside of the boater is the manufacturer's label which reads 'extra quality, manufactured by Ayres & Smith Ltd., London, W. Expressly for W. V. Brown, Hosier, Eton. The wearers name 'H .E. W. Arnott', possibly Hughie Arnott can be found written in ink. After the Second World War the spray of artificial flowers decorating the boaters were replaced with real ones.Every year Eton College celebrates George III birthday by holding a procession of the boats on June 4th (at which boaters like these are worn). The college boats go down the river, and as they pass the spectators standing on the riverbank, the crews stand in the boats holding their oars up vertically.Over the years many of the upper and lower boats have had patriotic names including Britannia, Prince of Wales and Victory. Records show that there was an Eton lower boat named St. George as early as the 1820's.29.5 cm wide x 33.5 cm deep x 9 cm high11½" wide x 13" deep x 3½" high
