Wine Press Screw, Oak Hardwood , dating from 1780ies

This Wine Press Screw originates from Tarbes, France where it was made in the 1780ies from solid oak. The Screw was used in what experts call a basket press. A basket wine press consists of a large basket that is filled with the crushed grapes. Pressure is applied through a plate that is forced down onto the fruit. The mechanism to lower the plate is often either a screw or a hydraulic device.
This screw is hand carved and according to the French Antiquities Dealer, made in Bordeaux (where all French wine press manufacturing was performed around 1780).
The Wine Press Screw has been into A PEDESTAL. THE BASE IS A 15 ½ IN. SQUARE AND THE TOP IS 11 ½ IN. SQUARE. The Hight is 38 inches (around 90 cm).
This solid oak screw ornament has been brought to Canada by the seller in 2004.

It’s a beautiful addition to a rustical setting and represents an historic value.
