Fabulous Japanese battledore hagoita by Yoshida Eiko, c.1877-1957. He studied under Sukarai Dozan. This hagoita is a 'kyogen-mono' style battledore which have kabuki play heroes in exaggerated poses. The doll itself is framed in a wooden glass enclosed case with a hole on the back for hanging. The doll is made from silk. The Japanese characters read, 'tenka taihe' which means for world peace. In the Edo and Meiji Periods, Japanese would go to the shrines at New Year's to pray not for themselves but for good harvests and everyones well-being. Very good condition. c.1915.
