'F’ Battery was a unit of the British Army, India. It was founded as an experimental Horse Artillery Brigade at the garrison town of 'Dum-Dum' in 1800. The Battery was later awarded the honour title ‘Sphinx’ for its 1801-2 campaign services. During 1842 whilst known as the 1st Battery of the, 1st Brigade of Bengal Horse Artillery, it was involved in the Afghan wars and suffered a disastrous retreat from Kabul during which three officers and 102 NCO's and men were killed, with only one man surviving. The Battery was later reformed and saw action at Ypres 1914, Loos and Somme 1916, Arras 1917, Messines 1917, Italy 1917-18, Arras 1918, Bapaume, Hindenburg Line, Canal Du Nord, Cambrai 1918, France and Flanders 1914-18. Throughout the 1930's the Battery spent most of its time at St Johns Wood, before moving to Cairo, to became part of the 4th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and later seeing action with the 7th Armoured Brigade ‘Desert Rats’. The Battery was later named ‘Yellow Dog’ and served in North Africa, Italy and North West Europe during WWII. This item is in excellent condition and should be viewed as a superb investment opportunity, by any collector. The Victorian silk panel tribute depicts the Royal Coat of Arms with regimental cypher, flanked by battle honours from 1801 to 1878. It has been worked with coloured silks and gilt thread and is in excellent condition. Size Approx: 59cm x 50cm.
