Egyptian history has fascinated the world in a major way since the discovery of treasure in the pyramids in the early 1900's. A sphinx has always been a popular image with collectors. This ivory sphinx was purchased in Egypt in the 1940s.
This figure is ivory mounted on a piece of wood that looks like ebony. The sphinx is made in two pieces...head and body. The carving is fairly primitive, but still has some interesting detail. The lion's tail curls up over his back. The headpiece is carved to look like striped fabric.
CONDITION: Excellent!

MEASUREMENTS: About 2 inches tall x 5 x 1.
