POSSIBLY THE EARLIEST HALF SIZE, SEALED, DATED wine bottle in existence.
This beautiful little gem is of very rare form and very rare size. It bears a large seal with the ROYAL ARMS OF BRANDENBURG/PRUSSIA and was possibly made for Fredrich Wilhelm I, “The Great Elector”, Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia or for his Court.
Extremely rare “Hershey Kiss“ shape with a “Saturn” string rim low on the neck. It is blown from deep green glass with a pushed in base and open pontil scar.
This little beauty was excavated in Europe, but has no chips or cracks. It has some pitting and losses to the “onion skin”, but is overall very solid and stable. Even the string rim is completely intact.
It is dated and lettered all around the circumference of its large, beautifully detailed seal. We are able to make out all the lettering around the right side (“1664 AD PAVLT DE ROYAL“), but only some on the left, see close-up photos.
We have photographed it alongside 2 other “black glass’ onion bottles for size comparison, see photo.
PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SEALED “BLACK GLASS” WINE BOTTLES IN EXISTANCE.
CONSIGNED TO WOOLLEY AND WALLIS FOR THE NOVEMBER AUCTION.
