HISTORIC NAVAL 1586 RAEREN STONEWARE STEIN, DANZIG FLEET. #SW669 - For Sale

HISTORIC NAVAL 1586 RAEREN STONEWARE STEIN, DANZIG FLEET. #SW669
Price: $995.00
Here is a historically important and possibly the only surving example of a 16th century German stein (schnelle) made for the naval fleet at the port of Danzig and attributed to the workshop of the famous Raeren master potter, Jan Emens!
The large medallion is beautifully decorated with a 3 mast ship (galleon) of the period, sailing on the sea with sailors, sails and rigging. The arms of Danzig appear in a shield in the center of the ship. The entire circumference is embellished with script, (needs to be deciphered). The date “1586” appears in the top right, see close-up photo.
A nearly identical excavated medallion, also dated 1586, appears as a drawing in the book Raerener Steinzeug, page 118, illustration #130, but bears the small initials IE for the potter Jan Emens just below the ship‘s bow. Ours does not, but the theme, the date, the artwork, lettering size, form, etc are all the same and obviously made in the same workshop, that of Jan Emens. We can send you a scan of the drawing if you do not have this book.
The handle on our stein has been restored, or re-attached, and the base of the stein is restored, see photos.
This may be the only surviving example of this historically important German stein. About 9 ¾” tall x 3 ¼ wide at the base.
