Here is another super piece from this important collection.
It is a circa 1650 stout, straight side case bottle beautifully engraved with a portrait of St. Hubert in medieval dress with crossbow kneeling on one knee before his vision of the holy deer with a crucifix shining divine light upon him. Stunning engraving, but unfortunately very difficult to photograph due to the glass reflections! Deep green thick glass with pewter mouth and screw cap and pontil scar on base.
This bottle has seen centuries of use! It was made circa 1650. then engraved circa 1700-1750 and later in life the pewter treads (then over 200 years old and worn) were replaced (a very nice job most probably by a pewter smith or tinker in the late 19th century).
The bottle is about 9 ½” tall x 5 ¼” across the base. Some inside stain and tons of base wear, otherwise perfect. These very early pewter top case bottles are seldom offered, let alone one with such a magnificent engraving!
