This listing is for an English Chippendale George III Period Two over Three Drawer Chest, c. 1760-90. It is entirely executed in solid mahogany primary woods with pine (backboards, dust boards) and oak (drawer frames, some blocking) secondary woods. The top and sides of the case are crafted out of single solid 7/8" thick boards of mahogany, dovetailed at the bottom and resting over a thick frame over fully original bracket feet. Each foot is blocked out with incredible thick secondary woods, creating strength to last without being replaced over 250 years.
The drawers slide smoothly in and out over full pine dust boards, a feature relatively isolated to English works of this period, which conveniently keeps the sliding action of the drawer from leaving dust and dirt on the clothes in the drawers below. A pair of smaller drawers rest over three graduated lower drawers, each face with a protruding lip to close flush with the case and replaced bail pull hardware. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back with oak secondary woods making up the frame and a chamfered bottom sliding into rabbets along the sides.
The back of the case features fully original boards with heavy oxidization bringing their colors to near black. Hand plane marks are evident throughout, left unfinished by the craftsman as he worked productively to complete this case. While some original nails still remain, most of the nails have over time been replaced to bring strength back to the case.
This is a fully functional and visually gorgeous chest with a luscious deep patina throughout every finished surface. It is a wonderful compliment to any formal room, firstly the bedroom where it was originally crafted for, but also for living rooms between two large chairs, or between two windows with a painting over top, or in a Georgian-taste dining room as a server. This is a great find for any collector of English antiques, but also for anyone looking to bring the timeless George III design to any formal setting in their home.
