18th/19th Century Ayutthaya Thai bronze reclining Buddha. The Buddha in the position of reclining is usually thought of as attaining final nirvana (parinibbana), but in Thailand is sometimes considered to be resting. Points of note include classic Ayutthaya features including eyes half closed in a divine gaze, higharching brows connected to the nose bridge, rather puckered mouth, and articulated chin. Rarely, some of the original mother of pearl and black onyx inset in the eyes is still present. The beautiful brown patina including moisture deterioration is truly remarkable. Altogether a very special piece. Dimensions: 20" long X 10" high X 6.5" deep.
