Victor Prouve was a French artist born in Nancy in 1858. He was the son of a glassworker at the Galle factory. He showed his talent early and attended the national school of art in Paris. There he was influenced by Manet, Renoir and Degas. He first obtained fame as a portraitist. Later he worked as a designer at the Galle factory. He turned to the Art Nouveau style designing decorative panels for town halls in Nancy, Moselle, and Paris. When the art school opened in Nancy, he was it''s first head. He died in Serif in 1943. Member of the Patriotic School along with Neumont, Willette, Steinlen. Often called France''s ''secret weapon'' in the battle for public approval and funding of the war, they were credited with rallying the entire French populace behind the war effort with arguably the most artistically impressive and moving group of posters ever produced. This image is a winged Marianne leading the French troops to victory. This poster is in excellent condition and is linen backed. It is 26.5 x 21, and would look wonderful framed.
