Only 725 proof Seated Liberty half dollars were minted in 1866, the first year to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST as part of the reverse design. Proofs are seldom encountered today and the first Motto year was particularly vulnerable to melting or loss.Soft golden and honey-brown colors bathe the borders of this equisitely struck Gem. Heavy cameo frost provides obvious contrast with the striated and reflective fields. A scant 725 proofs were struck, not including the unique No Motto proof that was stolen at gunpoint from the DuPont family in 1967 and never recovered.Certification No. 1773158-021 NGC
