EPHRAIM DOWNS PILLAR AND SCROLL WOOD WORKS MANTLE CLOCK - For Sale
EPHRAIM DOWNS PILLAR AND SCROLL WOOD WORKS MANTLE CLOCK
Ephraim Downs was born in 1787 and died in 1860. During his working career, he was associated with many other noted clockmakers including Luman Watson, Silas Hoadley, Eli Terry and Seth Thomas. His mill is listed in the History of Bristol, Connecticut. This fine example of his work has a lovely case with very attractive undamaged veneer. The brass finials are later additions. The wood dial is an old original with a small area of paint fill-in at the upper left corner (mostly hidden when the door is closed). The wood works were recently professionally serviced and run well including the hour-strike on a clear pleasant cup bell. The door glasses are replacements and correct to the case. The paper label inside the case is quite readable although stained. This is another consignment clock from a nearby collector/expert and priced considerably lower than the other pillar and scrolls in our current inventory. A VERY attractive, working clock that will look simply GREAT on your mantle or clock shelf.
