A Chinese Portrait Miniature of a Young American Gentleman, Circa 1810. The China Trade miniature of a gentleman is within a fine original Chinese gilded black lacquer frame. ;The miniature depicts a young man with reddish brown hair parted down the center with piercing blue eyes in a blue jacket with white waistcoat, shirt and cravat. ;The panel is painted to depict an oval panel. Dimensions: 3 1/4" x 2 1/4" Provenance: Mr. Martyn Gregory, London. Reference: Decorative Arts of The China Trade, Carl L. Crossman, from Chapter 10 Gilt-Decorated Lacquerware. The author notes some extraordinary pieces of lacquerware with black and gilt decoration and writes: "The forms made...were all copied from western models send to China of made from designs and plans in English and continental books and catalogues." page 263-264.
