Very Rare set of 12 English Cromwellian period oak dining chairs with turned legs, and plain side stretchers, the front stretchers turned and with turned uprights, c1645. Each chair measures 42 inches high, 19 inches wide, 19 inches to the seat and 17 inches deep. The set was purchased from an English monastery in 1975 by a London dealer operating under the name "The Oak and Walnut Shop", which was located at 98 Crawford Street. We have all the original paperwork. The chairs were upholstered in period style with dark red velvet and bronze tacks. The 12 chairs were appraised by Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc, NY, on April 30, 1980, and also by John Hazard Forbes in West Chester, PA, on March 7, 1980.
