Here is a very early, black glass, onion / mallet form known as a “flat sided onion”. It bears an extremely nice heraldic crest of the Batson, Burrow and Marshall Families; a lion stantant guardant (like the lions in the Royal Arms of England). It was made during the 1700-1730 period, but most probably about circa 1720, just when the mallet form was evolving. It was not made in a standard dip mold as most mallet forms were, but started life as a glob (like onions did) and them formed by blowing and rolling on a marver. Note that the bottom edge and shoulders are rounded. It is a very deep olive-amber, black in reflected light, and has a semi-glossy / semi-matt finish with a beautiful subtle purple iridescence overall. Obviously it spent some of its life in a stream or moat! Perfect condition with no chips or cracks. About 8 1/8” tall x 5 ¼” wide. Deep kick-up in base with large open pontil scar. Important and rare form! A very heavy, thick, glass bottle with tons of bubbles in the glass and a perfect, very crisp, knock your socks off seal!!!
