IMPORTANT LEIDEN MEDICAL ACADEMY ENGRAVED DUTCH WINE GLASS, CIRCA 1760. #G12
Price: $1995.00
This important circa 1760 Dutch wine glass is beautifully engraved with the Medical Academy building and attached “Hortus Botanicus” (plant study for medical students) at Leiden University as it appeared during the mid 18th century. On each side are plants used in medical preparations. Along the top is engraved “SALUS ACADEMIAE” , Latin for “Salute to the Academy”.
This very fine glass might have been engraved in the workshop of the most important Dutch engraver of the time, Jacob Sang.
The style of engraving, the subject matter and the execution of the lettering along the rim all strongly suggest that the engraving could have been executed in the workshop of Jacob Sang or a close contempory.
Several unsigned engraved wine glasses of this period exist that are attributed, by these merits, to Jacob Sang. They now command prices in the $2,500.-$5,000. range. If this piece had the tiny Jacob Sang signature on its foot rim it would command a price 10-20 times what we are asking here.
This extremely rare and important 18th century wine glass will make a fine addition to any early wine glass collection or a wonderful gift for the physician or surgeon. No cracks or chips. Overall moderate crizzle to glass. 7” tall.
