Harper's Weekly Cover, September 28, 1872. Black; cream. Paper. This original engraved cover is marked, "Harpers Weekly, Vol. XVI.--No. 822, New York, Saturday, September 28, 1872." The engraving is a political cartoon titled, "Circumstances Alter Cases. U. S. G. Let us Clasp Hands over the Bloody Chasm!" It shows Grant extending a hand to a bearded man with a plaque marked, "Gratz Brown." The White House and Capitol dome are in the background. It is signed, "Th:Nast."
