C1760 - 65? Worcester Precipice Pattern Bowl - Workmans Mark (SOLD 2012)
Price: $955.00
A very fine Worcester porcelain bowl handpainted with the Precipice pattern from the Charles Crane collection, the underside with his Worcester collection label No: 183. The presence of the IH workmans mark has been described by leading experts as making this very large Worcester bowl a rare and very early example of the Precipice pattern. Early examples show a finer detail and a particular care to the painting compared to the later ones.

Leading experts are of the opinion that workmans marks were not used after 1760. During excavations at the Worcester factory site no fragments with the Precipice pattern were found prior to the 1765 levels. In the Brandon French and Sandon blue and white bible 1989 they state that marks found for this pattern are open crescent only. So that was then and things have moved on so this may in fact be an earlier piece. Geoffrey Godden was of the opinion that workmans marks were used after 1760. As to the exact date of this piece we will probably never know.

The bowl has been pictured alongside a tea bowl for size comparison only.

The condition is perfect with no chips, cracks or restoration. The handpainted scenes are beautifully clear a crisp showing the particular care the painter has shown to this early example of the pattern.
Measures 215mm diameter x 93mm high
