Our Stock # LFA1004
This is a Charles II carved oak box. c.1650-1670
Showing all the hallmarks of its age (some 350 years) this box has survived since one of the most unsettling periods of English history:
The civil war had finished climaxing in the execution of his father, Charles I in 1649. Defeated by Cromwell, Charles II fled to France for nine years whilst Cromwell ruled. Following Cromwells death Charles returned to the throne in England and lent support to the re-established Church of England.
It is likely this was a bible box, originally with lock and key that have long since disappeared. A blanking wooden plate was added later.
The hinges are original and the foliate carved front bears the initals 'R L', presumably the original owners initials.
As would be expected there are bumps and marks all over the piece with knocks to the lid and a minor split in the front, all of which adds great character to this historic piece.
Any questions at all please do ask.
