BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN 1880's PICKLE CASTER!
The Wilcox Silver Plate Co. has a history dating back to 1865. This company was based in Meriden, Connecticut, and was one of the original firms that helped form the International Silver Company in 1898. The factory shut down in 1941 due to a metal shortage during W.W.II.
Quadruple silver plate was some of the highest quality
made during the late part of the 19th Century. A simple comparison between “Standard” silver-plate and “Quadruple” would be if you use 1 troy ounce of pure silver to electroplate “Standard” silver-plate then you would use 4 troy ounces of pure silver to electroplate "Quadruple" silver-plate on that same item. So, basically "Quadruple" silver-plated items are four times as heavily plated with silver than items marked “Standard” silver-plated.
Pickle caster sets were basically designed to contain and dispense pickles, before refrigeration. The pickle casters evolved from the caster sets used on vintage tables in the 18th Century.
This Vintage Quadruple Silver-plate Pickle Castor was made by the Wilcox Silver-plate Company in Meridan, Connecticut.
This quadruple silver-plated piece is decorated with detailed vintage ornamentation. This three piece set consists of a silver-plated footed caster, one glass jar insert, and a silver-plated lid. The glass jar is embellished with florid engraved designs such as floral leaves and stunning foliage designs. There is scroll work on the both sides and relief on the top of the lid. It has four small feet at the bottom.
"Wilcox Silver-plate co "is stamped on the bottom along with the number "0695".
These pickle jars are becoming very popular with collectors.
CONDITION: Free of any dings, dents chips or repairs. It needs a real good cleaning. The glass jar is in excellent condition no scratches, chips or marks. On the bottom there are some wear marks near the feet. The pickle tong is missing; however there is an abundance of tongs that would compliment this set.
MEASUREMENTS: 10.5" tall x 4.5" diameter base. Jar is 7" tall x 3" diameter.
As the pictures will confirm, this is a unique and beautiful pickle/jam caster, collectors are sure to love that will offer many more years of use to enhance any home.
