Sterling Silver Repousse Case Cologne Bottle English 1904 - For Sale

Sterling Silver Repousse Case Cologne Bottle English 1904
Price: $325.00
This rarely seen glass cologne bottle in a sterling repousse case is 4-1/2" high, 3-1/2" in diameter. There are clear English sterling marks on the bottom inside rim, which date the silver to 1904, with additional marks on the outside top edge. This case was produced during the reign of Edward VII. I have not been able to identify the maker's mark of WC. The elaborate repousse design of birds, tulips, drapery swags and a mask below the unengraved center cartouche appear on both sides of the hinged case.

It is most unusual to find the original glass cologne bottle inside the case, since the bottles are prone to break during the 110 year life of the piece. It is just as unusual to find the original paper label on the bottle. The back of the glass is embossed Johann Maria Farina/No4/Juelichsplatz No4. Farina was an Italian perfume designer and maker, born 1685 in Italy and died in 1766 in Cologne, Germany. The paper label states that the descendant of Farina made the Eau de Cologne, and he was the patented purveyor to King Edward VII and other Imperial and Royal Courts. The original sterling stopper and cork are present, but I have not removed the cork, in order not to damage it.
