Hughes, under the name Gale, Wood & Hughes. Wood & Hughes had served apprenticeships under Gale. In 1845 they left to form their own company. Wood & Hughes was in business from 1845-1899. They manufactured a full line of solid silver tableware, with a particularly wide selection of ornamental flatware. A disastrous fire in 1891 resulted in the loss of records, models and patterns. The company neveer fully recovered from this blow and by 1899 the partners determined to sell out. Mr. Frost of the retail firm of Black Starr & Frost, persuaded Clarence Dunn with his friends Charles Graff and William Washburn to buy out Wood & Hughes. Black Starr & Frost wanted to develop a special relationship with a quality silverware manufacturer. Graff, Washburn & Dunn filled that role admirably. Marks include W & H, PAT.1878, STERLING. There is also a lable on the box that reads, E.S. Ettenheimer & Co., JEWELERS, Cor. State and Main Sts., Rochester, - N.Y. Very good condition.
