The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground. Meandering leafy border. Colours olive green, cream, dark green, light green, magenta, copper and gold. Signed and dated ''Mary Atkinson : Taught by E. Williams 1816''. Finely embroidered motif of Britannia (upper torso and head is drawn on the canvas, not stitched) standing at the shore below a tree, sailing ship in the background. Good. A few holes. Stain to the ground above Britannia. A few pale stain specks. No stitch loss. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Victorian, dated 1857 1857 Silkwork Sampler by Helen Bowen. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours navy blue, cream, black, pink, green, turquoise and gold. Verse reads ''And Canst thou Parents for a moment think . that> we thy children when old age shall shed. Its blanching> honours on thy weary heads . Could from our> best of duties ever shrink . Sooner the sun from his> bright sphere shall sink . Than we ungrateful leave y> life(?) in that day . To pine in solitude your lifes awa y''. Signed and dated ''Helen Bowen Her work Aged 12 Years 1857''. A good set of motifs, including angels, a lady with a baby, fir trees, butterflies, dogs, fruit baskets, birds, potted flowering plants, squirrels, hearts, peacocks, a lady and a gentleman and a house with a garden. Generally good. A number of holes. No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground. Some stitch losses to the top line of the verse. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours copper, cream, blue, green, pale blue, black, dark green and gold. Alphabets A-Z in lower case and numbers 1-7. Verse reads ''The year rolls round and steals> away The breath that first it gave> Whateever we do where er we be> Were travelling to the grave!''. Signed and dated ''crissy longden worked This sampler february 27 in The year 1827 Warmsworth clif aged 13 years''. Warmsworth is a place in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. A wonderful set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, dogs, rabbits, a fox, flowers, birds, owls, squirrels, hearts, fir trees, butterflies, lady and gentleman figures and two houses. Generally Good. A few small holes along the bottom. A few small stains, uniform age darkening and some old glue stains around the edge. Very minor stitch loss to the border and one divider line. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. The sampler is finely worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Triangle border inside a meandering floral border. Colours gold, blue, black, magenta, copper and greens. Verse entitled ''A CONTEMPLATION ON NIGHT.'' reads ''When the pure soul is from the body flown,> No more shall Night''s alternate reign be known;> The sun no more shall rolling light bestow,> But from the Almighty streams of glory flow.> Oh! May some nobler thought my soul employ,> Than empty, transient, sublunary joy.> The stars shall drop, the sun shall lose his flame,> But thou, O God: for ever shine the same.''. Signed and dated ''18 Maria Druce Aged 12 Years 36''. A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including a house with a garden below clouds and dogs on the lawn, birds, angels, squirrels nibbling on a nut, fir trees, dogs, blossoming trees, lions, flowers, sheep, butterflies, fruit baskets and potted flowering plants. Generally Good. A number of holes, and a few areas where the ground is thinning. A few stains and uniform age darkening of the ground. Minor stitch loss to the triangle border. Signed and dated ''Helen Jameson Augt 1837''. Unusual motif of a large house flanked by trees. Lady and gentleman figure outside a small house below, with fruit trees and flowers either side. Good. Several holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven and the sampler is slightly over framed along the bottom. Verse reads ''Praise to thee, thou great Creator.> Praise be thine from every tongue.> Join . My soul, with evry creature.> Join the universal song.''. Signed and dated ''Elleanor Corps her Work in the 10th year of her Age 18..'' (the last digits of the date unstitched). A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a lady and gentleman in the garden, dogs, birds, flowers, fruit baskets, crowns, Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk and flowering trees. Glued around the extreme edges only, not at all visible from the front, to a board with wood backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours dark green, light green, cream, dark blue, pale blue, gold, light brown, dark brown and black. Verse reads ''One way let all thy thoughts and actions tend> Reason their constant guide and truth their end> And ever mindful of thy mortal state> How quick how various are the turns of fate> How here how there the tide of fortune roll> How soon impending death concludes the whole> Compose thy mind and free from anxious strife> Endure thy portion of the ills of life.'' Inscription reads ''Honour your Parents''. Signed and dated ''Mary O Leary Aged 11 years 1843''. A good set of motifs, including a large house flanked by fir trees, potted fruit trees, flowers, stars, birds and potted flowering plants. Good.
