George III, dated December 1795 1795 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Graffham. Framed in an old burr maple veneer frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours brown, pale green, black, green and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Verse reads ''Notwithstanding all the advantages of Youth, few> young people please in conversation, the reason is, that> want of experience makes them positive and what they> say is rather with a design to please themselves than any> one else.''. Signed and dated ''Elizabeth Graffham December 1795''. A few motifs including stags, flowers, hearts, diamonds, crowns and trees. Generally good. No holes. A few pale stains where the sampler was previously folded. No stitch loss. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Sampler is overframed at the bottom on the right hand side. Frame showing slight wear with the veneer missing in a few places, otherwise sound and ready to hang. 16.25ins by 11ins wide
