George IV, dated November 25 1824 1824 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Gibson. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass. Fixed to chipboard with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Greek key border. Colours black, cream, blue, copper, magenta, gold and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-28. Verse reads ''Let gratitude in acts of goodness flow> Our love to God in love to man below> Be this our joy to calm the troubled breast> Support the weak and succour the distrest> Direct the wanderer dry the widow''s tear> The orphan guard the sinking spirits cheer> Tho'' small our power to act tho'' mean our skill> God sees the heart He judges by the will.''. Signed and dated ''Elizabeth Gibson Aged 10 Years York November the 25 1824''. York is a city in North Yorkshire, England. A wonderful motif of a kneeling girl picking flowers from the ground, with shrubs either side and butterflies above. Good. No holes. A few stains and uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Slight colour run around the verse and signature threads. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang. 18ins by 17ins wide
