Victorian, dated November 1837 1837 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Commins. Framed in an old, carved wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours green, blue, navy blue, dark brown, gold, black, pink, magenta, olive green and cream. Verse titled ''RELIGION'' reads ''Tis religion that can give> Sweetest pleasures while we live;> Tis religion must supply> Solid comfort when we die.> After death, its joys will be> Lasting as eternity!> Be the living God my friend> Then my bliss shall never end''. Signed and dated ''MARY ANN COMMINS AGED NINE YEARS NOVEMBER 1837''. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a lady and gentleman in a garden, flowers, trees, birds, pagoda''s, butterflies and potted flowering plants. Generally Good. A few holes. A few patchy stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 18.25ins by 13ins wide
