A Rare Canadian Woolwork Picture of a Ship with flags, Dated 1874 The woolie depicts a fully dressed ship and ;the motto '' DEFENCE, NOT DEFIANCE '' within a flag surround with a laurel garland, all in original bird''s eye maple ogee moulded frame with silver-gilt slip. Dimensions: Height: 61.5 x 78.2 cm. (24 1/4 x 30 3/4 in.) Reference: ; ; ;The motto "Defence, not defiance" is the motto of the Canadian regiment, The Highland Light Infantry of Canada, which on the 14th of September 1866 became the 29th Waterloo Battalion of Infantry, formed by regimentation of five independent companies.
